Small dog breeds are very popular in Northern New Jersey and throughout the United States, in general. Small dogs generally cost less as far as food and some veterinary costs go. Small breeds are easier to handle making them great for first-time dog owners. They are portable and more likely to be welcome everywhere, especially when traveling.  Here is a look at a few of Jersey’s favorite small dog breeds.

The YORKSHIRE TERRIER

The Yorkie is recognized by its long hair and signature perky ears. This breed loves to be the center of attention and was originally bred for hunting rodents. The Yorkshire Terrier is a small, toy-size terrier, usually no more than seven pounds. Despite their small size, they are feisty, bold, and tenacious little dogs. Yorkies are very active and playful and love to play fetch and chase balls. They are also very intelligent and trainable. They are relatively easy to care for, and because their hair is much like humans, it will need to be brushed daily. Yorkies are also relatively long-lived for a small breed, with a lifespan of 12-15 years.

The CHIHUAHUA

Chihuahuas are one of the smallest breeds of dogs in the world and weigh less than six pounds. They were originally bred to be a companion for their owners. They have an intense curiosity and will follow their noses anywhere they want to go. Chihuahuas can be stubborn and independent, but they love to curl up on your lap or by your feet at bedtime. They are best suited for living in a home with older, considerate children where they can be the center of attention! Chihuahuas require minimal grooming such as a weekly brushing with a soft brush to keep their coats looking shiny. Chihuahuas don’t require much exercise.

The Miniature DACHSHUND

Dachshunds, funny-looking wiener dogs, are popular pets for many reasons. They are loyal, loving, and make great companion dogs. Dachshunds are a good choice for first-time dog owners and families with small children. They are also a popular breed for seniors and people with disabilities. Dachshunds are known for their strong hunting instincts and are often used as working dogs in a variety of roles, such as law enforcement, detection, and search and rescue. They are relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming and exercise needs and are relatively easy to care for.

The BOSTON TERRIER

As well as being handsome and round, with expressive eyes and a snazzy Tuxedo coat, the Boston Terrier is one of the most affectionate dog breeds. They are intelligent sensitive dogs that require gentle correction and praise to train. They are sturdy but portable, people-oriented, and a steady source of smiles for their human companions. They are also relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming, and their short coats are easy to brush.

And finally, the TOP DOG …. the POMERANIAN

The Pomeranian is the smallest of all the Spitz-type breeds. A member of the toy group, this small dog’s personality is merry and friendly. These lively little dogs are intelligent, playful, and affectionate, making them the perfect companion for people of all ages. Pomeranians are also relatively easy to care for, although they do require some grooming to keep their thick fur looking its best. If you’re considering adding a Pomeranian to your family, be prepared to give them plenty of love and attention – these dogs thrive on human interaction.
